September 4, Fineko/abc.az. German lender Commerzbank has announced a new share buyback program of up to €1.2 billion ($1.39 billion) aimed at boosting shareholder returns amidst takeover interest from Italy's UniCredit.
The buyback program for the bank—which holds a market capitalization of around €44 billion—will commence on September 4 and run through February 10, 2027, at the latest. All repurchased shares will be cancelled. CEO Bettina Orlopp highlighted that the initiative reflects the bank's consistent capital return strategy. The move follows UniCredit increasing its stake in Commerzbank to nearly 50% in July, softening resistance to a potential merger from both the bank and the German government.
