July 17, Fineko/abc.az.Kazakhstan's Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Alim Bayel, and Shahin Babayev, Executive Director of the Azerbaijan Transport and Communications Holding (AZCON), discussed the current state and future prospects of bilateral cooperation in the transport and logistics sector, the Kazakh Embassy in Baku informs.

The meeting sides highlighted the strategic role of transport connectivity in strengthening trade and economic ties between the two countries and across the region.

The parties also stressed the importance of coordinating efforts to increase the capacity of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR).

Special attention was given to joint infrastructure projects. Ambassador Bayel recalled that in 2024, the presidents of Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan agreed to build a joint intermodal terminal at the Port of Alat.

The Azerbaijani side said the update of the Baku Port master development plan is nearing completion, after which construction of the intermodal terminal is expected to begin.

The ambassador also referred to an agreement between the two presidents under which Kazakhstan will purchase ships built in Azerbaijan, while Azerbaijan will buy locomotives manufactured in Kazakhstan.

Kazakhstan has already placed an order with Baku Shipyard LLC for the construction of two dry cargo vessels for its national needs. In response, Babayev said Azerbaijan would consider purchasing Kazakhstan-made locomotives in the near future. Between 2015 and 2022, Kazakhstan supplied 50 locomotives to Azerbaijan.

At the end of the meeting, both sides reaffirmed their mutual interest in further developing the transport and communications potential of the two countries and strengthening their roles as key transit hubs across Eurasia.
