India to Allocate $20 Billion to Boost Local Chip and Smartphone Manufacturing

21:30 - 16.07.2026

July 16, Fineko/abc.az. India is set to launch its "Semicon 2.0" initiative with a massive budget of nearly $20 billion aimed at accelerating the domestic manufacturing of smartphones and semiconductors.

Under this program, approximately one-third of the total funding will be directed toward supporting local smartphone production, while the remainder will be allocated to building the country's own microchip industry, supplemented by state subsidies for locally assembled electronic devices. This strategic push comes as approximately 25% of global iPhones are already manufactured in India with the active participation of major Apple suppliers and contract manufacturers, all while the country prepares to commission its first domestic semiconductor fabrication plant by 2028.
