July 13, Fineko/abc.az. Negotiations about restoration of Kirkuk–Banias oil pipeline between Iraq, the U.S. and Syria are ongoign, but the American side has already formed a pool of contractors to repair the pipeline.
The project includes the revival of a strategic oil supply route from Iraq's Kirkuk to the Syrian port of Banias as an alternative to the Strait of Hormuz. It is expected that the agreements reached will be announced in the near future during the Iraqi PM's visit to the U.S.
The pipeline, which was built in 1952, has been inactive since the 1980s and is in poor condition. Experts believe that instead of being restored, it may require complete replacement, which could take up to three years.
Previous attempts were made to restart the pipeline, but the parties were unable to reach an agreement.
